Turn your Webcam to Night vision

any cam cant see in Night without IR light, lets make it .

logo-camera

Most digital cameras, be it still, video or webcams, can only capture images when there is sufficient light on the subject. Insufficient light creates hazy and bad quality images. So what do you do when you need to capture images or record videos when there is low or no light at all?

Infrared (IR) light can illuminate the subject and you can capture images even in the dark. IR light is actually an electromagnetic radiation whose wavelength is higher than normal light visible to the human eye. This means, when a subject is illuminated with infrared light, humans cannot see it, but a digital camera can capture these images quite well. The CCD or sensor (the main image capturing chip) inside a digital camera is highly sensitive to infrared light. But there is an obstacle here—manufacturers of digital cameras implant an IR filter in the pathway of the lens and the sensor. This filters out the IR rays so that only pure visible light can pass through. The reason—infrared light can agitate the image quality and give out overexposed pictures.

This workshop helps you remove the IR filter in order to get the camera to capture images in the dark. Basically, all you need to do is remove the IR filter completely. We shall also show you how to make your own infrared light source so that you can use the webcam as a surveillance device at night. The best part is that nobody would even know that there is a camera as nothing is visible in the dark. Try out this workshop at your own risk.

Hacking the webcam

Unplug the camera from the computer and remove all the screws using a screw driver. You can do this trick with any still/video/mobile camera too. Open the camera case carefully to expose the internal circuit board. Remove the lens housing by unscrewing it anti-clockwise. Now carefully observe the rear section of the lens housing and you shall find a red-tinged glass—the IR filter. This filter needs to be carefully removed from its place. Pop out the seal to separate the IR filter from the housing carefully using the sharp, pointed edge of a knife or needle. Make sure you do not damage the filter or the seal in case you decide to place it back again. Mount the lens housing back and close the camera the same way you opened it. The camera is now ready for action.

Stealth lighting

Now we show you how to make an Infrared LED array. IR LEDs are available in any electronic spare parts shop for around Rs 4 each. You can also rescue some from damaged, old or discarded IR remote controllers. The amount of LEDs to be used would purely depend on the amount of light you would require and the voltage you would be applying to the circuit. Each LED runs on approximately 1.2 Volts DC (confirm the voltage ratings of the ones you buy). So ideally, if you plan using 12 Volts to power the array, make sure you use at least 10 LEDs in series. Do your calculation and assign the number of LEDs to be deployed on the job. Once done, mount each LED on a veroboard or general purpose PCB and create your LED array. If you are not familiar with electronics and/or soldering, you could ask a friend for help or have the circuit assembled for you by an electronics technician. Solder all the LEDs in serial and finally solder some wires to connect it to the power adapter or battery. Alternatively you can design your own LED arrays. Assemble it on a cardboard or plastic ring and mount it around your camera lens, or create miniature spotlights to spread it around your house. Let your imagination run wild with ideas. If you hack your mobile phone camera, you can use a single IR LED to secretly take pictures at night.

All done

Now that your camera is hacked and the infrared array is ready, you need to try out your camera in the dark. Create a dark environment either by closing all windows and curtains in your room or wait till sunset. Start a webcam software and switch on the Infrared LEDs. Observe that what a human eye cannot see is being captured very easily by the webcam. Infrared pictures captured by the camera will be in black and white, so don’t panic about the absence of color detail in the images. You can use an array with a large number of IR LEDs for a more powerful light throw or use multiple smaller arrays in different areas to brighten up the whole room/area. Caution: Continuous exposure to infrared light can be harmful to the human eye. Make sure you do not stare directly into the LED array when switched-on. You would not notice any light, but the eye pupil is wide open in the dark and Infrared light can blast through freely and cause damage too.

What next? If you have a wireless/Wi-Fi camera, you can use it as a surveillance camera at night. Use applications such as ‘WebcamXP’, ‘HandiAVI’, etc, which support motion sensing or time scheduled image capturing and recording. You can mount it on your main door, in your garden, in the garage, on the stairway or any place to be monitored in the dark.

Note: Once the IR filter has been removed, pictures in broad daylight get highly overexposed.

Install Windows from a USB drive

logo-usb-xpOne might need to reinstall an operating system from time to time, but the netbooks and ultra-portable laptops gaining popularity today have no optical drives.

What do you do when there is no optical drive in your PC and you want to install a new operating system on it? Before you invest in an external drive, we will tell you about a more cost-effective solution. Why not install Windows XP or Windows Vista from a USB flash drive instead? All you need are the following items:

A desktop or laptop with Windows XP/Vista (according to the OS required to be dumped onto the USB flash drive).

An optical drive in the PC.

The original Windows XP or Vista installation disk.

A 1 GB or 4 GB USB flash drive for Windows XP/Vista respectively.

A software called ‘Komku-SP-usb.exe’ (for the Windows XP part) which can be downloaded from ‘http://download179.mediafire.com/b3tjl6ds2gfg/zlvkwwzmjmt/Komku-SP-usb.exe’. Alternatively, you can avail of the utilities from this month’s CHIP DVD or search for these on http://download.chip.asia.

This step-by-step workshop will be in two phases—Windows Vista and Windows XP.

Installing Windows XP from a USB flash drive

Step 1: Download the software ‘Komku-SP-usb.exe’ from the websites mentioned earlier and execute it. The executable file will extract the necessary utilities to a folder called ‘C:komku’.

Step 2: Once the package has been extracted, go to the folder ‘C:komkuPeToUSB’ using Windows Explorer. Execute the file ‘PeToUSB.exe’. Plug in the USB flash drive and make sure you choose the following (see image below) before clicking the start button. Select ‘USB removable’, ‘Enable Disk Format’, ‘Quick format’, ‘Enable LBA (Fat 16x)’ and finally give the drive a name under ‘Drive Label’. Once it’s done, click start to let the utility format the drive.

Step 3: Next you will need to start the command prompt. Click ‘Start | Run’, type ‘cmd’ and press [Enter]. Then go to the ‘bootsect’ directory by typing the command ‘cd C:komkubootsect’ and pressing [Enter]. Now type the command ‘bootsect /nt52 F:’ and press [Enter]. (The ‘F:’ is the USB flash drive letter represented in ‘My Computer’. Check to verify the drive letter used by your USB flash drive). Let the utility do the needful. Do not exit the Command Prompt yet.

Step 4: Now you will need to change to the directory ‘Usb_Prep8’ by using the command ‘cd C:komkuusb_prep8’ and pressing [Enter]. Here execute the command ‘usb_prep8’ and press [Enter]. Press any key to continue and you will see a welcome screen with a menu appear in the Command Prompt.

Step 5: Now at this stage, you will have to insert the Windows XP installation disk into your optical drive. At the Command Prompt menu, type ‘1’ and press [Enter]. A new popup will appear asking you to choose the location (path) of the Windows installation disk. Select the optical drive and click ‘OK’. Next choose ‘2’ from the menu and change the drive letter to any drive letter which has not been taken. It is drive ‘T:’ by default and you can ignore this step unless you do have a ‘T:’ drive on your computer.

After this, choose ‘3’ from the menu and enter the drive letter of your USB flash drive (in this case it would be ‘F’). Finally choose ‘4’ from the menu and press [Enter]. Wait for a few seconds for the process to complete and you will see a prompt to allow the utility to format the USB flash drive. Type ‘Y’ and then press [Enter] at this stage to let the utility proceed and install the necessary files from the Windows XP installation disk to the USB flash drive. This process will take a few minutes and depends on the speed of the flash drive.

Step 6: After the files are copied, you will see a popup window asking you for permission to copy files from the temp drive to the USB flash drive. Select ‘Yes’.

Step 7: Next there will be another popup window asking you to allow the utility to change the boot drive letter of the USB flash drive from ‘F:’ to ‘U:’. Select ‘Yes’.

Step 8: Finally, after all the processes are complete, you will see yet another popup window asking if you want to unmount the virtual drive. Select ‘Yes’. Exit the Command Prompt now and you will see that your flash drive is ready to install Windows XP to another computer.

To install Windows XP to the computer, you will have to go to the BIOS and enable the option of booting from a USB removable device. This option is usually found under the boot sequence menu of the BIOS. Plug in the USB drive to the computer before you turn it on. Now your computer will boot from the USB flash drive and will be ready to install Windows XP. Follow the necessary steps to install Windows XP and your computer will be up, raring and ready to go and running Windows in no time.

Installing Windows Vista from a USB flash drive

Making a bootable Windows Vista installation USB drive is far simpler than doing so for Windows XP because the utility is built into the operating system and can be deployed from the Command Prompt itself. All you would need is a computer running the Windows Vista operating system, the original Windows Vista installation DVD and at least a 4 GB USB flash drive. Follow the simple steps ahead to make your own Windows Vista bootable USB drive.

Step 1: Start Windows Vista, insert the pen drive into the computer’s USB port. Start Command Prompt, type ‘diskpart’ and press [Enter].

Step 2: Type ‘list disk’ and press [Enter]. Carefully note down the USB flash drive’s disk number listed here. In this case it would be ‘Disk 1’

Step 3: Type ‘Select disk 1’ and press [Enter]. Here the Diskpart utility is instructed to choose the disk 1 as the drive to be worked on.

Step 4: Type ‘Clean’ and press [Enter]. This command clears out all the information of the volumes, partitions, boot sectors and the MBR from the USB flash drive.

Step 5: Type ‘Create partition primary’ and press [Enter]. This command will create a primary partition on the USB flash drive.

Step 6: Type ‘Select partition 1’ and press [Enter]. This command instructs the Diskpart utility to select the newly created partition.

Step 7: Type ‘Active’ and press [Enter]. This command will make the current partition (primary) active to enable the USB flash drive to boot from.

Step 8: Type ‘Format fs=fat32’ and press [Enter]. This command formats the selected drive partition using the FAT32 file system.

Step 9: Type ‘Assign’ and press [Enter]. This command assigns a drive letter to the newly formatted partition. As there is no drive letter specified in the command line, the next available drive letter is assigned to the drive.

Step 10: Exit from the Diskpart utility using the ‘exit’ command and pressing [Enter]. Now insert the Windows Vista DVD in the optical drive and type the command ‘xcopy e:*.* /s /e /f F:’ and press [Enter]. This command will dump all the contents of the Windows Vista DVD onto the USB flash drive. Your USB drive is now ready to install Windows Vista on any computer. Just set the boot sequence in the BIOS of the system to boot from the USB, insert
the USB flash drive into the computers USB port and turn on the computer. Follow the regular installation for Windows Vista.

Note: To know more about the Diskpart utility commands, browse through the URL ‘http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300415’.

Installing Windows XP or Windows Vista from a USB flash drive is much faster as compared to installing from a CD/DVD. A high-speed flash drive would make a difference.

Watch High Quality Movies On mobile Phone

logo-camcoderWell, people often think that having a big screen we can seen everything better way on the bigger screen. But very less of them actually think about watching movies on their phone. They don’t think of it, they just dream about it. They have got everything but still something or the other thing comes to stop you. Well, to see a video is not a big thing on a phone, the big thing is that how high quality videos you can watch. What can be the lowest size of the file that you are gonna watch despite it is the best quality you can watch.

Lets start.

Things Necessary To Be Known or Considered

1. Resolution – This is really an important thing to know. Resolution actually is the number of pixels in one side by another side. E.g a resolution of 240 x 320 means that on the breadth side of the screen there are 240 pixels and on length side there are 320 pixels. Now to know what are pixels, please make efforts to google. The resolution of most phones are easily found on websites like gsmarena and mobile88.

2. Aspect Ratio – What is aspect ratio? Well i can’t give you the whole book on this but its simple to understand what i am going to say. Aspect ratio is the ratio of the length to the breadth of the screen. How can you find it? Well, people do get the resolution of their phone easily. Simply find the ratio of the units of resolution. That willl give you the aspect ratio. E.g for 320 x 240 resolution the aspect ratio will be 4:3.

3. Bitrate – Bitrate simply defines the quality of the video. The more the bitrate of the video the better qualilty it owns. Be it audio or video.

4. Format – This is important or lets say most important part to know. As all phones some formats and not all, it is always necessary to know the formats that are supported by a cited phone.

5. Frame Rate – Well, videos are nothing but the compiling of many different photos or pictures showing together in a small duration of time. Compiling here does not means joining, it rather means the display of different pictures(with some difference in their entire content) at a very fast speed. Here these pictures are known as frames. When 30 frames (pictures) are displayed in merely one second, it is known as 30 fps. Therefore, just imagine, the more frames displayed in one second, the better quality is the video. So it is necessary to know this thing. Always try googling for this. And yeah, one thing easily notable is that the more frame rate, the more bitrate of the video and there is a increase in the size of each file.

Where is the problem

Well the problem is actually that people know these things but not the facts behind these factors. The problem is we need to know the basic ideas of resolution and aspect ratio. What benefit does the aspect ratio does? It defines in what size will be the video, not the resolution of the screen but the area of the screen it will cover. The same thing one can just understand by pressing ‘A’ in VLC player while watching a video.

The fact is the computers nowadays are very efficient with good hardware. That means they can handle great quality videos like HD. But one can’t watch HD videos on the phone. The reason is that they are just overpowered in their properties influenced by the above mentioned factors. Our mobile phones, most of them can play videos of only a limited quality. So we need to change the magnitude of these factors. Like computers may handle even 120 or more fps videos but most of the phones may support playback of only 20 fps. The same condition lies in the case of bitrate. However, no phone gives any error regarding the fps of the phone usually but regarding bitrate they do. Due to this, even the phone playbacks the video, the visual content lags behind and the audio runs forward. That means there is no problem in conversion but the problem is with the capability of the phone.

What will be suitable

For converting the videos, we need some converter softwares. Xilisoft is the most famous, however total video converter and super video converter are also widely used. Here is a configuration as an example of a 240×320 resolution screen which one should input before the conversion. I am giving an example for the video playback on SE w910.

Resolution
– 320 x 240 ( not 240 x 320, because we watch videos in a length/ breadth manner The length portion is on the top while watching).
Aspect Ratio – 4:3 just because 320:240 is equal to 4:3
Format – Preferably MP4 because it is greatly variable.
Bitrate – Put is around 500-600
Frame rate – Put it arounf 18-20 fps.

Gmail labels: now you can DRAG and DROP

Starting Wednesday, Gmail users will find their labels farther up the left-hand side of their screen.

Now you can drag and drop your Labels to your Mails or your Mails to your Labels to assign or apply labels.

Google is rolling out another tweak to its Gmail user interface that makes its labels behave a little bit more like folders.

Gmail has never used folders, at least in the traditional sense of the familiar classification system used by other e-mail clients. Instead, it encourages users to “label” messages with notes like “Work” or “Travel” instead of putting them away in folders, which has the primary benefit of allowing a single message to be given multiple labels and therefore appear in multiple categories, rather than having to decide whether the itinerary for a business trip should go in “Work” or “Travel.”

But earlier this year, Google acknowledged that traditional e-mail users were treating the labels like folders anyway, and it began allowing them to hit a “move to” button to label a message and store it away. A further tweak being rolled out Wednesday moves a Gmail user’s list of labels from the lower left-hand corner of the navigation screen to the upper left-hand corner, right underneath the usual labels such as “Inbox” and “Sent Mail,” where they will look just like a traditional list of folders.

The concept of labeling isn’t going away, said Todd Jackson, Gmail product manager. “We wanted to add some functionality that would make labels more useful for people used to folders,” he said in explaining some of the changes.

The primary addition is the ability to drag and drop messages using the mouse “into” labels. If you were pretending that the labels were folders before Wednesday’s tweak, you had to use the “Move to” button at the top of the screen to label, and then archive a message to get it out of your in-box. You can also drag a label onto a message, rather than using the “Label” button at the top.

And now that the list of labels has been moved up, pushing the chat list down, Google has minimized the number of labels that appear in the default list as to not push the chat bar down too far. For those who have dozens of labels in use, clicking on the “more” button will bring up the additional labels without going to a different Web page, and the number of labels shown in the default view can be set by the user.

The changes forced Google to kill its first Gmail Labs project: right-side labels, although dozens remain. Google is moving everyone on Gmail to the new design as of today.

Skipscreen Bypass download time limit on popular filesharing sites

Popular filesharing sites like Rapidshare, 4shared, Mediafire, Mihd, etc., force free users to wait for  few seconds to several minutes depending on file size on download pages. This is basically to benefit from ads shown by gaining a few clicks. While it is essential to keep their servers running, free users find it a bit of a nuisance to wait till the countdown is over. Again, if you wait  too long, the link expires.

To bypass this countdown timer, a wonderful firefox addon is out by the name of skipscreen.

SkipScreen

SkipScreen skips unwanted pages on popular filesharing sites like:

# Rapidshare
# Megaupload
# Mediafire
# Uploaded.to
# zShare
# Sharebee
# DepositFiles
# Sendspace
# Divshare
# Linkbucks
# Link-protector

Above is the official list on Skipscreen Site. To bypass timelimit on 4shared install  auto download script from Crimechamber.

Free users will now find rapidshare more fun. Just open the url on multiple tabs and sleep. Skipscreen works for you.

Install addon from here

If you have problems installing the addon or have issues with functioning, please report, we will take this to the attention of Skipscreen Admins.

How To Remove SpyWare, AdWare Clean and Fix Windows

Recently my company gave me a laptop to use for work. It was riddled with SpyWare and AdWare. The instant I fired up IE the Virus and SpyWare would trigger up and redirect me to some random ad laden web page requesting me to download even more SpyWare. Since reinstalling the OS was not an option I had to clean up the system on my own somehow. I am listing a bunch of software that you’ll need before we proceed.

  1. Avast or AVG (Get the Free Versions)
  2. AdAware (Get the free Version)
  3. CCleaner
  4. AutoRuns
  5. ProcessExplorer
  6. FireFox

Update Window

The first step is to make sure your windows is updated with the latest security patches and fixes. If you are running Windows XP make sure you have installed Service Pack 2. Once you are done installing service pack 2 you should run Windows update and get the latest patches. Another alternative is to use AutoPatcher this is a utility which will download all the required patches and security fixes from Microsoft and store it in a folder on your system which you can later reuse to apply to other computers that you need to update.

Run A Full Scan Using AntiVirus and AntiSpyware Softwares.

There are a number of free AntiVirus software I have for now listed two of them. Virus can do all sorts of weird things to your computer. For example on my laptop the virus disabled the “View Hidden Files” option, even though I checked the option it would reset it back, it also set a number of scheduled tasks in my Task Scheduler to call a number of different copies of the Virus. Run a full scan of the system. Next run a Anti-SpyWare software I highly recommend AdAware.

Clean Up Your Start Up Items.

Most SpyWare and Virus configure your start up items to run the Virus when you boot up or log into your system. Use the MsConfig tool in windows to check which items are being loaded at start up. If you see any suspicious looking entries uncheck them also identify which file is being called and manually delete it. Sometime this might not work like in my case I had to log into widows using safe mode (When Windows is booting up press F8 you will see an option to load windows under safe mode) and delete the offending file. Use the process explorer tool to see if the processing running on your system are all legitimate. Also use AutoRuns to delete any entries that look suspicious especially DLL that are unsigned and have random looking names.

Clean Up And Optimise Your System.

There are a number of tools that can clean your system of unwanted and unused temporary files and registry entries. One of the best tools that I have found so far is CCleaner which provides a number of advanced options to clean up your system. Try to keep the number of items that start up when you boot the system to a minimum.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure.

Better safe than sorry. Ditch IE period and get FireFox. Run an Anti-Virus software and do a full scan periodically. Also do a full Anti-SpyWare scan periodically. Also scan external drives like thumb drives and external hard disk when you connect it to the computer.
